The client had transferred over £450,000 in cryptocurrency over a two month period before the scammer vanished, deleting the website and ceasing all communication.
Tracing the Digital Footprint
Our investigation began with the limited information the client had: email correspondence, a Telegram chat history, and the wallet addresses used for payments.
Using advanced OSINT (open-source intelligence) techniques, we:
•Conducted reverse image searches on the scammer’s profile pictures, revealing they were stolen from a LinkedIn user in the U.S.
•Analysed domain registration data, which showed the scam site had been registered using false details—but the hosting provider was located in Eastern Europe.
•Traced cryptocurrency transactions through blockchain analysis, uncovering that the funds had been moved through several wallets before being cashed out via a known exchange.
Identifying the Scammer
While the scammer had gone to great lengths to cover their tracks, we discovered that one of the wallets had previously interacted with a regulated exchange that required Know Your Customer (KYC) verification.
We worked with a solicitor to issue a disclosure request to the exchange, supported by a detailed evidence report compiled by our team. The exchange provided the KYC held on the account and also provided an IP address linked to multiple other fraud investigations.
Further cross-referencing revealed that the same alias and wallet patterns had been involved in similar scams across Europe.
